Our Story
How It All Began
Michael and Jessica Halapy, a husband-and-wife duo with a shared love for animals and a vision for something extraordinary,
stood at the edge of their 44-acre property. In 2018 they made the decision to leave the bustling suburbs and make their home in the foothills of North Carolina.
Michael, a former corporate professional turned Master Dog Trainer, had spent years honing his craft. He had trained service dogs, mastered obedience techniques, and even graduated as valedictorian from the Highland Canine Master Dog Trainer course. But he always knew, he wanted something more—a place where dogs could thrive, learn, and feel loved.
Jessica, a clinical director with a heart as big as her passion for animals, shared his vision. Together, they had cared for dogs, chickens, cats, and even bees on their hobby farm.
Their journey began with a spark of frustration. As pet owners, they had struggled to find a boarding facility that met their standards. The options were either outdated facilities, overpriced, or lacked the professionalism they sought from the staff.
The fields stretched around them, into the forested landscape, and down to the steams - a canvas waiting to be painted with
their aspirations. This was no ordinary dream—it was the beginning of TFR Board and Train, a sanctuary for dogs
and their owners.
“Why not create the solution ourselves?” Jessica had said one evening, and so, the idea for TFR Board and Train was born—a place that would combine luxury amenities with affordable pricing, offering a haven for dogs and peace of mind for their owners.
Now, they were ready to take the leap.
The road ahead was not without its challenges. For years they poured over market analyses, crunched numbers, and
navigated the labyrinth of permits and zoning laws. Their vision was clear: a state-of-the-art facility, premium
indoor/outdoor kennel runs, amenities for the dogs, and daily enrichment activities for their furry
guests. They wanted every detail to reflect their commitment to quality and care, from the calming music played
over the sound system to the tranquil, scenic rural grounds where dogs could have a vacation of their own.
Now, in 2026, as construction is set to finish and the opening day is rapidly approaching, Michael and Jessica became adventurers in their own right. They were not just building a business; they were creating a community. They envisioned partnerships with local trainers, groomers, shelters, and veterinarians, fostering a network of support for pet owners. They dreamed of hosting workshops, training sessions, and “doggy vacations” where pets could enjoy a safe and enriching experience while their owners
traveled.
But the heart of their adventure lay in their mission: to be a lifelong resource for dog owners. Whether it was a
puppy’s first obedience lesson or a senior dog’s comfortable stay, TFR Board and Train would be there every step of
the way. Their motto, “True North,” symbolized their unwavering dedication to their clients and their pets.
As the opening date drew closer, the Halapys stood together on their property, watching the sun set behind the forests surrounding the boarding center.
This was their story—a story of a love for animals, determination, and the unshakable belief that every dog deserves a home away
from home.
